My life completely changed the day I sat next to another artist on a plane, and during our conversation, she mentioned CreateSpace to me. If you don’t know what that is, it was the original formatting website you would use if you wanted to publish on Amazon.
Now you just use your normal Amazon account and login to the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) page. Amazon changed the game for anyone looking to publish. Here is why we use them at Bootstrap Publications.
1. They make it so easy. It’s like having a wizard for publishing a book. All you have to do is follow the steps. Everything is upload friendly for documents and PDFs. They have excellent customer service, and tons of FAQ articles where you can get more information on topics if you don’t understand them.
2. Low cost printing options. I don’t know if they are the cheapest or not, but what I do know is that it was affordable enough for me, and having them print it made it easy for them to have the inventory of my book on hand at Amazon. They do take a large chunk of the profit, but in most cases that is worth it for an artist who is just getting started and looking to publish for their first time.
3. Made in America. #merica. I love that they print all their books right here in the U S of A on environmentally conscious material. I called to verify prior to using them. The customer service rep didn't know the answer actually. He said he would research and get back to me. I was like mmmhmmm, that will never happen. But he actually did! He sent an email follow up. I was very impressed.
4. Legitimizing. For the majority of the public, if you're not on Amazon you don't exist. Having your book on their platform makes it more real to people, and they take you a lot more seriously.
