The Book Idea

The idea for this book came over a decade ago.

I had a job writing software for an industry-specific simulator, and things for the company were going well. My boss started to think about diversifying the company offerings. He had a keen interest in education and training, and thought about maybe, possibly considering, if conditions were right, to start thinking about making educational games for kids - maybe. <sarcasm>His certainty was palpable</sarcasm>

Not one to ignore such dedication to a plan, I got right on it.

It wasn't long afterwards that the company was sold and everything changed. I never even got to present my general idea for a game. I even had about 500 words of introduction written. That is where the first few pages of There's No Such Thing as Dragons comes from.

Girl running over stone bridge with backpack, frog peeking out; text above reads "There's No Such Thing as Dragons." Green landscape behind.

If the game was ever produced, our heroine would have immediately gotten lost in the forest, and the game play would be her journey as she goes. Learning things along the way. For example, she would learn that there are no such things a dragons.

The story in the book has more depth regarding her family, and is centered on a mysterious calamity that is happening to her valley. The story is grounded, and there are indeed, no dragons. Our heroine has to learn to face things as they are, and only trust in what she can see. (nerd moment: when I say "what she can see," I mean what is theoretically possible to see. For example, I can see the dark side of the moon. I cannot see it right now, but if I had a spaceship, I could see it. However, I cannot see inside your mind, no matter what.)

Anyways, after I left that company, I just kept writing. Every few years going back to it until 2024 when I decided to cut the story into three parts, and publish each part as it's own little book.

Book 1 of 3, will be out in 2025.

Fun fact: When I was a kid, it wasn't dragons. It was UFOs. We all believed in UFOs.
